High Adventures

Each year, Crew 67 plans, prepares for, and completes a multi-day trek at one of Scouting America’s four High Adventure camps. Planning begins about 21 months(!) in advance, and preparation begins as soon as Venturers sign up (usually about 18 months in advance). Prep varies by Adventure but typically includes physical fitness training, relevant skills development, monthly Crew meetings, and a series of “shakedown” activities intended to ensure the Crew’s gear and skills are up to the challenge of a High Adventure. Venturers who participate in multiple High Adventures can earn the National High Adventure Triple Crown or Grand Slam award.

Philmont Scout Ranch covers 140,177 acres of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains in northeastern New Mexico. Every four years, Crew 67 returns to Philmont for a 7-, 9-, or 12-day backpacking trek. Each Crew hikes more than 50 miles across rugged terrain with elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,441 feet. Treks pass through staffed camps that offer programs featuring the best of the old west—horseback riding, burro packing, gold panning, chuckwagon dinners, and interpretive history—with exciting challenges for today such as rock climbing, mountain biking, and sport shooting. It’s an unbeatable recipe for fast-paced fun in the outdoors.

NORTHERN TIER HIGH ADVENTURE

Northern Tier’s wilderness canoe bases in Ely, Minnesota and Atikokan, Canada provide Venturers access to millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests, and wetlands in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) of Minnesota and the Crown Lands and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. A highly trained staff member, called an Interpreter, accompanies all crews on their trek. Every four years, Crew 67 returns to Northern Tier for a 7-, 8-, or 10-day trek covering between 50-150 miles of wilderness travel.

THE SUMMIT HIGH ADVENTURE

Rock Climber from Crew 67 at The Summit in 2024

The Summit Bechtel Reserve is nestled in the wild and wonderful mountains of southern West Virginia. Its high adventure program has been described as summer camp on steroids, as each day brings a new Adventure: climbing, rappeling, and soaring on Alexander’s Eagle Flight or through the canopy course; riding world-class trails on mountain bikes, skateboards, and BMX bikes; sharpening your skills with archery, rifle, and shotgun ranges; and taking on the rapids of the legendary New River with a thrilling whitewater rafting trip. Crew 67 returns to The Summit every four years for a 7-day Adventure.

SEA BASE HIGH ADVENTURE

Venturers from Crew 67 at Sea Base in 2025

Sea Base offers aquatics High Adventure programs that include sailing, scuba diving, rustic camping on an undeveloped barrier island, fishing, and more. With 18 different programs launching from the Florida Keys, the US Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas, Sea Base offers an Adventure sure to please any Crew. Every four years, Crew 67 returns to Sea Base with Crews of up to 20 people. In 2025, two Crews of 8 completed the Keys Adventure Sailing program. In 2029, we expect to tackle the Bahamas Tall Ship Adventure, on which a crew of 18-20 live and work aboard a 60′ catamaran sailing around the Sea of Abaco.

A Youth-led Program

Venturing is a fully youth-led program. This means that 1) all members of the Crew take ownership of the program by choosing and planning their own adventures, 2) all members of the Crew are responsible for self-governance through electing officers who run meetings and manage the program, and 3) all members of the Crew gain real-world experience by organizing events, managing budgets, leading others, and serving their community. Adult advisors assist the Crew by 1) providing mentorship in planning and management skills, 2) ensuring safety in all adventures, and 3) providing support for logistics that require legal age, contractual obligations, or financial clearance.
